Hey there cutie-pies! Hope you enjoyed getting to know the adorable paradise living Vie from Vie Couture last week. This week I am having a quiet word with a fab-tatsic gal who resides in my FAVE ever city... NYC of course. Sigh let me just take a few secs to compose myself before I continue... 1... 2... 3... OK that's better.
How lucky am I to have the ever-amaze Sammy Davis on here today, big hooray! Sammy Davis (who almost shares my surname - Davies) is Miss Vintage Extrordinaire, she lives and breathes the stuff and has developed a well known name within the field. Not only is she a clothing era specialist but she also carries a fab vibe; total positivity. So kind, friendly and oozing with goodness, Miss Sammy must have an enormous amount of grande-karma on back up.
Whether your after clothing inspiration, handy vintage tips or where to shop Miss Sammy is your-go-to vintage connaisseur. Make sure you pay Sammy Davis Vintage a visit and while your at it, check out her YouTube Channel. Sammy's videos are fantastic, they scream personality and are totes professional.
Where do you live? Tell us an interesting fact or two about your city.
I live in Spanish Harlem, a neighborhood in upper Manhattan, New York City. The neighborhood is so rich and diverse and full of inspiration ... I feel like I'm in my own little bubble up high in the streets of NYC!
Where would be your dream place to live?
I've recently been attracted to moving to Australia. I've met so many fantastic vintage lovers from Australia who shop at the vintage store I work, A Little Wicked. I love the laid back vibe of an Aussie and the fact that they are always smiling. They don't take life so seriously -- we can all learn a thing or two about happiness from their culture!
How did you get into blogging?
I launched Sammy Davis Vintage when I was selling vintage clothing full-time. I wanted to have a site where I could share my personal vintage style and what I've learned as both a vintage expert and businesswoman selling vintage clothing.
How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?
I have my morning routine down to a tee so that it typically doesn't take longer than 45 minutes .. and sometimes shorter! My morning usually begins with throwing a bunch of clothing onto my bed to decide on that day's "look" (my room is perpetual mess!). Next up is a shower faster than speed racer, quick blow dry and a 10-minute makeup routine that I just might finish on the subway en route to work. I like to cut corners!
You are known for your passion for Vintage Clothing, what is you least favorite fashion era and what item from this era would leave you in a state of nervous shock if your were forced to wear it out and about in a "normal" setting?
I love all vintage eras equally, but I'd have to say that power-suits from the 1980s make me cringe! While the big & wide shoulder look of the era was representative of women gaining traction in the workforce, it's still a trend that I don't think should be repeated in the name of women's rights anytime soon. Some girls can wear the masculine cut jackets quite well, though -- it's all about figuring out what look works best for your frame.
Favorite item of clothing in your wardrobe right now?
I'm absolutely loving '60s clothing right now, so I'd have to say that this 1960s sheer drop waist floral dress with a tie back and lace trim is absolutely my favorite item right now. I just think it's so feminine without looking cutesy or girlie.
5 items that MUST be in your handbag AT ALL TIMES?
My iPhone, lipstick for a red lip, nail file, business cards and a Clif energy bar.
Satirical Style Questions:
A time machine can swoop you back or forth, where would you want it to stop?
If I could live any era it'd have to be the 1970s. 70s clothing trends, 70s cultural revolution, 70s way of life ... I am a free spirited hippie at heart, and all I want is peace & love. I behave so much like a 70s child today that I think my past life was in the 70s!
Tell us a secret about you that not many people know??
I quit my job nearly three years ago to pursue my passion of vintage clothing full time!
Name an influential icon that blew your mind when you were a young'un... You saw her and thought yes, she's the one. I want/need to be/know you?
I fell in love with Gwen Stefani when I was 10 years old. Tragic Kingdom was my jam! I followed Gwen's style transformation and was in awe of her every look and the fact that she owned her personal style without apology. Her music was raw and real and her fashion choices reflected that truth.
Tell us about your most cringe-worthy boy crush (celeb or real life)?
While he's incredibly awkward, I have a thing for Jesse Eisenberg. I even saw him perform live in a play this year! (and yes, he was as awkward as his character in The Social Network!)
What really p*sses you off? (such as people who cough without covering their mouths, obnoxious types etc…)
Nothing makes me angry, because I believe that what angers us most is our own internal feelings. We become angry at ourselves .. not at others. It's important that we forgive others and we forgive ourselves in these moments of frustration. Maintaining peace is the key to happiness, no matter the circumstances beyond our control.
If you were an animal what would you be?
I'd totally be a poodle or a golden retriever. Maybe a mix ... a golden doodle?!
You can be the opposite sex for the day what would be the first thing you would do?
I'm a runner, and men run faster than women. So I'd go see how fast I could run a mile
Share one of your most cherished memories?
One of my most cherished memories is one of my first memories ever, from when I was about 4 years old. I used to love to play dress up and sing and dance to my favorite 80s jams. My parents put on "The Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats and I had on a crazy tutu and some wild accessories. As soon as I heard the beat, my booty was shaking! I spent the entire song dancing my 'tush off. That memory has defined the rest of my life: Dance like nobody's watching!
The full quote is: "Dance like nobody's watching; love like you've never been hurt. Sing like nobody's listening; live like it's heaven on earth." - Mark Twain.
Eek! Love stylish Sammy! Hope you enjoyed getting to know my dear girl. Massive thanks to the gorge Mademoiselle Davis for taking part... If you hop over to Sammy's blog at some point over the next few weeks you will spot a vintage fash post put together by moi so make sure you check it (Sammy Davis) and comment! Gros bisous xoxoxo
